Bond
The bond between human and dog is made solid and stable through social interaction and physical contact, among other things. The dog is very willing to bond, since the species is reliant on a social community. The bond must not be so close that Fido is completely helpless without the caretaker, but strong enough for the dog to look trustingly to the two-legged partner for guidance.
